The BioPark Innovation Price for application-oriented research from Regensburg

The BioPark Innovation Prize is awarded annually to two innovative research projects from the life-sciences or health sciences in Regensburg. The main criteria are a high level of application relevance and economic benefit of the research.

Current publications, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral or post-doctoral theses from the fields of biotechnology, pharmacy, diagnostics, analytics, medical informatics, medical technology or healthcare can be submitted.

The application phase for 2024 has been completed. The submission phase for 2025 will begin in the summer semester 2025. Further information will be announced on the homepage.

Supporting marketable technologies

Supporting the development of marketable technologies from the OTH Regensburg, the university of Regensburg and the university hospital of Regensburg.

All graduates and active employees of Regensburg universities who conduct research in the fields of healthcare or life sciences are eligible to apply.

By awarding the Innovation Prize, BioPark Regensburg GmbH aims to promote the transfer of knowledge and the utilization of new technologies and inventions from research to industry. The Innovation Award is intended to make exceptional research and its practical benefits accessible to the public. With the prize, we would like to encourage scientists to bring their innovations into the economy as marketable technologies or products.

Conditions of participation

All graduates and active employees of the Regensburg universities can apply. The publication, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral or post-doctoral thesis to be submitted must be in the field of “life sciences”, medical informatics, medical technology or “health sciences” and have a high application-related aspect or benefit. Two innovations will receive awards, which as evidenced by a current publication to be submitted, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral or post-doctoral thesis, can demonstrate the highest application aspect and possible economic benefit. The majority of the underlying research work should have taken place at one of the two Regensburg universities.

The winners also receive a free consultation voucher for a patent application (law firm Dehmel & Bettenhausen) and start-up advice (BioPark). Applications must be submitted by October 11th 2024 (deadline for submission) electronically in PDF format (smaller than 10 MB) at the BioPark Regensburg GmbH office. Prizewinners from the University of Regensburg will receive the prize (cheque) as part of an awards ceremony in the Kaufmannsgewölbe Hinter der Grieb at November 6th at 6pm.

Award winners from OTH Regensburg will receive their prize at the ‘Evening of Awards’ on 7th November 2024 at OTH Regensburg.

Winners will be honored personally and announced publicly in the press.

Promoting key technologies of the future.

By awarding the Innovation Prize, BioPark Regensburg GmbH aims to promote the transfer of knowledge and the utilization of new technologies and inventions from research to industry.

Biotechnology is one of the key technologies of 21st century and is already creating a rapidly growing market in all areas of life. As typical cross-sectional technology, there are many approaches in biotechnology, pharmacy, diagnostics and analytics, medical technology, medical informatics and the healthcare industry, especially at the universities and hospitals in Regensburg.

Regensburg is booming as a healthcare location.

With a turnover of €1.4 billion and a total of 15,500 employees, the industry has developed into an important economic sector in the city. With 50 companies and almost 4,000 employees, the Regensburg Bioregion is now the second largest region of its kind in all of Bavaria. The heart of the cluster is the BioPark Regensburg GmbH, a company of the city of Regensburg directly on the university campus. Here our more than 36 leaseholders with 600 employees on 18,000 m2 are looking for new products, therapies and solutions on the subject of health along the value creation chain from research to the patient.

BioPark and the law firm Dehmel & Bettenhausen jointly promote young scientists

Together with the patent law firm Dehmel & Bettenhausen located in the BioPark, we would like to promote application-related ideas and sources of inspiration. Two ideas are awarded the Innovation Prize every year.

2018
Johannes Maier, doctoral student at the OTH Regensburg, received the BioPark Innovation Prize for the topic of his doctoral thesis, the imitation of human soft tissue using 3D printing.

2020
The award was given to Dr. Daniel Deuter from the Clinic and Polyclinic for Neurosurgery (Director: Prof. Dr. Nils Ole Schmidt) at the University Hospital Regensburg (UKR).
